Now That I’m a Mom

And it’s all the feels you guys, now that I’m a mom. Now that I’m doing those very things, rather than just writing about them.

Here’s just one example.

printed newspaper on a work desk with a lamp overheadIt was 2008 and I was writing for a section of the newspaper called “Good News.”  We printed all the community’s fundraisers, donations, and achievements there, next to pictures of ribbon cuttings and smiling faces.⁣

⁣This page involved me re-writing everything from formal press releases to cute handwritten notes from little old ladies. I wasn’t a city reporter yet, so I never interviewed anyone for it, but I was on my way.⁣

⁣One of the regular contributors was a cat rescue that I forget the name of now. Every Thursday I’d write about how they needed donations of litter, food and blankets.

⁣When my mom wanted to buy a kitten for my little sister some months later, I told her I knew just the place where we could adopt one.⁣ I was so excited to finally interact with the cat organization that I had been writing about all those years.⁣

I called for my mom, and the adoption group put me in touch with a foster in Arroyo Grande, just a little south of where I worked in SLO. I drove to her house. She was a mom
who fostered kitties with her children as a hobby, giving her kids something to do.

The fam had transformed their entire garage into a kitten haven, with climbers made of netting and pvc pipes from floor to ceiling.⁣ I was so impressed. I thought she must be the coolest mom ever! And that one day, when I was a mom, I’d love to try what she was doing
with foster kittens.⁣

And now, here we are. While we don’t have a kitty gym built in the garage, we do have two ginger babies from Homeless Animal Rescue Team (HART). And I hope I’m teaching the kids something worthwhile.

Now that I’m a mom.⁣
