For kiddos like mine who may not have the patience for a full-fledged grownup hike, the Harmony Headlands Trail is a totally doable 1.5-mile trek. Just enough for the fam to get outside, get some fresh air, and see what there is to see off the beautiful Highway 1 Discovery Route.
Harmony Headlands is a 784-acre State Park reaching out toward the coast. You can hike there from 6 a.m. to sunset and there’s dirt parking with room for about 10 cars at the entrance off southbound Highway 1, five minutes north of Cayucos.

The Heilmann Park Splash Pad is the only FREE splash pad in the North County. It’s located at the larger Heilmann Regional Park and Playground at 9400 El Bordo Ave. in Atascadero. The splash pad is situated right by the restrooms. The waterplay spot super small, but very popular with littles.Readers on my Facebook Page say the splash pad is NOW ON for summer 2019.

Hop’s Bounce House is one of the few real indoor play places to beat the heat or rain for families. Designed for babies to tweens, the facility features a bunch of different bounce houses to jump around in, climb on and slide down. The setup is well thought-out with the cubby wall for shoes, toy area for babies and toddlers, TVs, the bathrooms and especially all the comfy couches and seating!
